Frequently Asked Questions – EZ TAGs

I already have an EZ TAG; do I also need to purchase a METRO HOT Lane Tag?

No. Your EZ TAG can be used to pay the toll if you use the METRO HOT lanes as a Single Occupancy Vehicle (SOV).

As an EZ TAG customer, how will I know what charges are for the METRO HOT lanes on my statements and transactions?

If you used the METRO HOT lanes, your monthly statement will have a separate section for transactions on METRO's facilities. Your online account transactions will also display this information.

I just purchased a METRO HOT Lane Tag; can I use it in the EZ TAG lanes?

Yes. As long as your account is in good financial standing, your vehicle license plate is registered on your account and your tag is properly mounted on your vehicle, you can use your METRO toll tag on electronic tolling lanes that accept TxTAG, NTTA TollTag and EZ TAG.

What happens if my toll tag account is not in good standing or my license plate is not registered on my account?

If your toll tag account is not in good financial standing, your license plate is not registered on your account or your tag is not mounted properly on your vehicle, you will be subject to receiving Toll Violation Invoices which include toll charges and additional fees.

I want to report a violator on METRO’s HOT lanes. Who do I contact?

You may contact METRO at 713-921-HERO (4376).

Are there certain toll lanes I must use?

Yes.

If your eligible vehicle has an EZ TAG backed by an active EZ TAG Account, you may use any lane displaying the “EZ TAG” sign.

If your eligible vehicle does NOT have an EZ TAG, you may only use EZ TAG-Only lanes. All other toll lanes will require cash payment.

Most eligible vehicles will automatically receive the discounted tolling rate in EZ TAG lanes as described above. If your vehicle is not recognized as an eligible vehicle for the program, resulting in a toll charge applied to your EZ TAG Account or the receipt of a toll violation invoice, please contact us during regular business hours for resolution.

Can a single EZ TAG be used in more than one vehicle?

No.  Just as your license plate is unique to your vehicle, your EZ TAG is unique to your license plate.

The EZ TAG Agreement for your Harris County Toll Road Authority EZ TAG Account requires you to update your information if you change vehicles and/or license plates. Keeping your account information updated and maintaining your EZ TAG Account balance will ensure your EZ TAG continues to function properly - keeping you from receiving Toll Violation Invoices, which you could incur if your vehicle travels on the toll road system without being properly registered with an EZ TAG Account.

Can I use my EZ TAG in a rental vehicle?

No, because EZ TAGs cannot be transferred from vehicle to vehicle.  However, to temporarily add a rental car's license plate to your EZ Account and enjoy the designated EZ TAG lanes, simply log into your account online and go to the "Vehicles & EZ TAGs" tab to add a temporary vehicle or call us at 281-875-3279.

Since EZ TAGs cannot be transferred from vehicle to vehicle, you cannot use your EZ TAG in a rented vehicle. You do have options on the toll road when in a rented vehicle, however:

1.  Our new EZ Plate feature enables you to temporarily add a license plate number to your EZ Tag Account.

2.  PlatePass.com enables you to enjoy the speed and convenience of high speed non-stop toll road use while renting a vehicle throughout the United States - simply get in your rental and drive! In most cases, tolls will be charged to the credit card used to rent the vehicle - it's that EZ! Visit PlatePass.com for cost and details or call PlatePass customer service at (877) 411-4300.

3.  Use the cash lanes while you are driving a rental vehicle. NOTE: You will be subject to toll road violation assessments if you fail to pay the tolls. In this event you may receive a violation invoice from HCTRA, or the rental car company may elect to assess additional administrative fees directly. Please ask your rental agent for details.

Can I use the new sticker tag on my motorcycle?

No.  Because many motorcycles do not have windshields and because the stickers can not withstand elements like wind and rain, motorcycles must continue to use the special hard case tag.

Do EZ TAGs work on motorcycles?

Yes.

Yes.  Motorcycles require a specialized EZ TAG due to climate conditions associated with motorcycle use.

Do I need an EZ TAG to be eligible for the HCTRA Veteran Discount Tolling Program?

No, an EZ TAG is not required for participation in the HCTRA Veteran Discount Tolling Program, but a vehicle with an EZ TAG will have greater access to the Harris County and Fort Bend County toll road system.

If your eligible vehicle does NOT have an EZ TAG, you may only use EZ TAG-Only lanes. All other toll lanes will require cash payment

Do I need to add my trailer to my EZ TAG Account?

As an EZ TAG Account holder, you are required to notify HCTRA of any changes to your account and vehicle information. Towing a trailer is considered a change to a vehicle and your account should be updated with this information. Multi-axle vehicles are charged a higher toll rate.

If you are towing the trailer temporarily, you can add the trailer to your account with EZ Plate. Learn more about how EZ Plate works here.

Note: Failing to update your account and vehicle information may result in toll violations.

How and where do I mount my EZ TAG?

Typically, EZ TAGs are mounted in the upper edge of your front windshield behind the rearview mirror. Some vehicles and/or motorcycles require a license plate or "bar tag."  A comprehensive list of vehicles which are not compatible with the typical sticker tag are available here.

Please mount and display your EZ TAG according to the instructions  received with your EZ TAG. Improper installation may cause denied access to certain tolling locations and result in violations associated with your account.

How are multi-axle vehicles (trailers) handled?

Technology in dedicated EZ TAG-Only lanes can detect multiple axles on vehicles. If you have an EZ TAG, per your EZ TAG Agreement, you are required to notify HCTRA of any changes to your account and vehicle information. Additional axles, such as the addition of a trailer, are considered changes to your vehicle. Multi-axle vehicles are charged a higher toll rate.

Note: Failing to update your account and vehicle information may result in toll violations.

How do I activate my EZ TAG?

You may activate your EZ TAG at www.hctra.org/tagactivation using the instructions included with your EZ TAG Kit. You should do this prior to installing the tag in the vehicle.

If you prefer, you can email, call or visit an EZ TAG Store location to activate your tag. If your EZ TAG is not activated using one of these methods, HCTRA will attempt to activate your tag for you when your license plate and toll tag are read on our toll road system.

NOTE:  It is the EZ TAG customer’s responsibility to ensure the EZ TAG has been properly activated, regardless of the activation method utilized. In order for the EZ TAG to be successfully activated, it must be mounted in the vehicle associated to the tag per the instructions provided in your EZ TAG Kit. Failure to do so may result in toll violations, which carry additional fees.

How do I add another vehicle to my EZ Account?

By logging into your account online, calling Customer Service or by visiting an EZ TAG Store .

Online: Log into your account and select the "Vehicles & EZ TAGs" tab, determine if it will be added permanently or temporarily and then follow the directions to complete the addition.

Telephone: Call Customer Service 281-875-3279 (M-F 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.).

Please note that adding a permanent vehicle(s) to your account will require an additional tag purchase for each additional tag(s) and may increase the minimum balance required on the account. NOTE: For accounting purposes old vehicles, such as those sold, will always be noted on your account but will show as "inactive".

How do I apply for an EZ TAG account?

Applications may be completed and submitted online OR printed and mailed to 7701 Wilshire Place Drive, Houston, TX  77040 or faxed to 281-874-0989. You may also visit an EZ TAG Store to receive your EZ TAG the same day.

How do I change my name and/or driver's license number on my account?

Please call 281-875-3279 or visit any EZ TAG Store.

For security reasons, we do not allow the name, driver's license number, tax ID, and/or company name on the account to be changed online.

How do I delete or remove a vehicle from my account?

Please contact customer service so that a representative can update your account.

While a vehicle will always remain listed on your account, you can deactivate the tag or retire the vehicle thereby changing its status on your account. Simply log into your EZ Account online and change the "vehicle status" under the "Vehicles & EZ TAGs" tab or call Customer Service at 281-875-3279. When you contact customer service please provide the vehicle information or license plate number for the vehicle you wish to remove. If you have sold the vehicle being deactivated on your EZ Account, we recommend that you fax a Bill of Sale to HCTRA at (281) 874-0989 or (281) 877-0402. We also recommend submitting a Vehicle Title Transfer form with the Texas Department of Transportation to update motor vehicle records.

How do I get my statements for filing my taxes?

You can find all of your monthly EZ Account statements online on the "Account Activity" tab.

Monthly statements are always available online which makes preparing your annual federal tax return easier.

Just login to your account, click the "Account Activity" tab, then choose "Statements." You can print each of the past months' statements individually.  While searchable transaction activity remains accessible for three months, statements are available for the past 18 months.

How does the EZ TAG program work?

The EZ TAG program allows participating motorists to prepay their tolls using a major credit/debit card or direct debit payment option. The EZ TAG itself is a small adhesive device that adheres to the inside of the windshield. As EZ TAG patrons use the system, tolls are electronically deducted from their account. When the EZ TAG account reaches the minimum balance level, it automatically charges (debits) the customer's credit card or bank account to bring it back to the original deposit amount.

How does the EZ TAG work?

The EZ TAG is a small transponder that communicates electronically with a computer in the lane you are using via radio frequencies. As you approach the lane, the EZ TAG will be registered and the appropriate toll based on your roadway usage will be subtracted from your account within 24 hours.

How is my minimum account balance determined?

The minimum account balance is determined by the type of payment used for the account as well as the number of EZ TAGs on the account.

The typical credit card-backed account with one to three EZ TAGs has a required replenishment amount of $40 and a low balance amount of $10.  This means that as you travel through the EZ TAG lanes and your account goes from an average $40 balance to $10 or below, the system will automatically charge your credit or debit card a minimum $40 re-bill, per the EZ Agreement.

The typical electronic funds transfer (EFT) EZ Account with one to three EZ TAGs has a required replenishment amount of $80 and a low balance amount of $20.  This means that as you travel through the EZ TAG lanes and your account goes from an average $80 balance to $20 or below, the system will automatically charge your EFT account a minimum of $80, per the EZ Agreement.

If you drive the toll system frequently you could see three or four re-bill charges on your credit account in a month. In order to minimize this, we suggest customers review their average monthly usage for the past three calendar months and adjust their account accordingly. Example: if you average about $200 a month in tolls, change the low balance to $50 and the required minimum (or replenish amount) to $150. Doing this will, for an average month, set the system to charge your credit card about once a month. Keep in mind, this works best when you average about three months of normal usage.

Please refer to the EZ Agreement for a table of charges that is based on the number of vehicles on your EZ Account.

How much does it cost to purchase a replacement EZ TAG?

A replacement EZ TAG will cost $10.00 to $15.00, per EZ TAG, depending on the number of EZ TAGs registered to your account.

Simply call us at 281-875-EASY or visit an EZ TAG Store location to purchase a new EZ TAG or login to your EZ Account online and follow these steps:

1.  Deactivate your current tag by changing the tag status to "Inactive" under the "Vehicles & EZ TAGs" tab.

2.  On the "Vehicles & EZ TAGs tab" select the "add a permanent vehicle" link and follow the steps.

If I close my EZ account, can I open a new account using the same EZ TAG if it is still mounted on my vehicle?

Yes, the old EZ TAG can be used on a new account.

You will need to contact Customer Service at 281-875-3279 (M-F 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) or visit one of our EZ TAG Stores.

If I have to replace my windshield, will I have to purchase a new EZ TAG?

Yes.  Sticker-type EZ TAGs generally become inactive once removed from the windshield and attempting to transfer these TAGs is likely to render them inoperable and place you at high risk for receiving toll violations.  Simply call us at 281-875-EASY or visit an EZ TAG Store location to purchase a new EZ TAG. You can also log into your online account to order a new tag.

HCTRA does not advise attempting to transfer tags; we recommend the purchase of a new EZ TAG when replacing your windshield or purchasing a new vehicle to ensure your toll road access. If you do attempt this transfer, however, please be aware the tag is not likely to operate effectively by raising toll gates or registering at EZ TAG only lanes - you should check your account online or call a customer service representative within 48 hours of your first post-transfer toll road use to ensure your tolls are being posted properly.

If I no longer need my new EZ TAG, how do I return it?

Simply visit any EZ TAG Store to return the unused EZ TAG or call 281-875-EASY (3279) (M-F 7:30 a.m. -5:30 p.m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) to close your account.

Any remaining balance in your account will be credited to your designated credit card or a check will be issued for EFT accounts.

If I sell my car, can my EZ TAG be transferred to the new owner?

Yes.  Please keep in mind you will continue to be responsible for the charges incurred on the EZ TAG until the tag is deactivated on your account.  Therefore, you must first deactivate your tag by logging into your account and changing the tag status to "Inactive" under the "Vehicles & EZ TAGs" tab or you may call us at 281-875-EASY or visit an EZ TAG Store location.

Once I apply online for an EZ TAG, how long will it take to arrive?

Once your application has been approved, verified, and processed, you should receive your EZ TAG within 3-5 business days if you requested to receive your tag by US Mail. Once you receive your EZ TAG in the mail, you may activate your new tag online at www.hctra.org/tagactivation.

What are EZ TAG program costs?

The EZ TAG program requires an initial prepayment of $40 for credit/debit card payment and $80 for electronic funds transfer (EFT), plus a $15 per-tag activation fee for the first three TAGs, and $10 per-tag thereafter.

If you enroll in the EZ TAG program using the credit/debit card auto-payment option, the pre-payment and minimum balance amount for individuals driving two-axle vehicles is $40 plus the EZ TAG activation fee of $15 per TAG (for the first three TAGs on an account; after three TAGs the cost per TAG is $10). If you enroll in the EZ TAG program using electronic funds transfer (EFT), the pre-payment and minimum balance amount for individuals driving two-axle vehicles is $80 with up to three (3) EZ TAGs on the account. Monthly statements for the previous eighteen months of your account usage are available at no charge when you have an online account, or you may elect to have printed statements mailed to you for free.

What are my responsibilities as an EZ TAG account holder?

Your responsibilities are contained in the EZ TAG Agreement included as part of your EZ TAG Account application.

By using the EZ TAG you are agreeing to your responsibilities as an account holder.  Please be sure you read this agreement carefully and understand the terms and conditions. You will be notified whenever there is a change in the terms and conditions contained in the EZ Agreement. Likewise, if any of your information changes such as name, address, credit card, or vehicle information, it is your responsibility to notify us immediately. As an EZ TAG Account holder, you are also responsible for maintaining a minimum balance in your account as described in the Application and Agreement.

What are the EZ TAG Store Locations and Hours?

Store locations and hours are available here.

What do I do when my EZ TAG arrives in the mail?

For your protection, mailed EZ TAGs are inactive and must be activated before they are installed in the vehicle associated to that tag. You must activate your EZ TAG at www.hctra.org/tagactivation. The instructions for activating and installing your EZ TAG will be included with your EZ TAG Kit.

What forms of payment does EZ TAG accept?

Credit/debit cards or electronic funds transfer (EFT).

Paying by credit card is the most convenient way to maintain your account. You may also include a secondary credit card on the account should your primary card become inactive or expire. Keep in mind that credit and debit cards always expire at some point and you must keep your account payment information current to ensure uninterrupted service and avoid potential violations.  The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) accepts American Express, Discover, Master Card, and Visa. Paying by automatic bank draft (electronic funds transfer or EFT) is also an option; always ensure the balance in your bank account is sufficient, otherwise your account is subject to an insufficient funds fee.  If an account reaches three (3) insufficient fund transactions in its lifetime, it is no longer eligible for the EFT option and will require a credit card to maintain your EZ account balance.

What happens if I go through a toll lane without paying the toll?

Pursuant to the Texas Transportation Code, Chapter 284, the owner or renter of record (not necessarily the driver) of a vehicle that passes through a toll facility is responsible for payment of all tolls. Failure to pay a toll is a toll violation, and is against the law.  HCTRA communications may refer to each instance of toll violation as a toll violation "event."

A toll violation event can result in a Toll Violation Invoice being sent to the registered owner/renter for the past-due toll amount plus fees. Independent of a Toll Violation Invoice, any toll violation event may also result in a traffic stop and the issuance of a traffic citation, which carries a significant fine plus court costs.

To pay your Toll Violation Invoice, or to pay an outstanding toll which has not been invoiced, see How do I pay for a toll violation?

Failure to resolve a Toll Violation Invoice may result in additional Toll Violation Invoices, fines, referral to a collection firm, withdrawal of eligibility to renew your vehicle registration, and/or other legal measures as defined by Texas law.

What happens if my EZ TAG is lost or stolen?

Per your EZ TAG Agreement, you are responsible for reporting the loss or theft of your tag.  Otherwise, you may incur fraudulent tolls on your account, for which you as the account holder will be responsible.

As indicated in the application and EZ Agreement, you may replace any lost or stolen tags by purchasing a new tag.

A replacement EZ TAG will cost $10.00 to $15.00, per EZ TAG, depending on the number of EZ TAGs registered to your account. Simply call us at 281-875-EASY or visit an EZ TAG Store location to purchase a new EZ TAG or login to your EZ TAG Account online: select the "Vehicles & EZ TAGs tab," then select the "add a permanent vehicle" link and follow the steps.

What if I am a veteran with a qualifying license plate, pulling a trailer?

If you have a qualifying license plate and received a Toll Violation Invoice because you were pulling a trailer, you will be required to complete a Toll Declaration form. The Toll Declaration form will attest that the trailer's license plate number that is reflected on the invoice was being pulled by 1) a vehicle registered with a qualifying specialty license plate, or 2) a vehicle registered to a Medal of Honor recipient. Once HCTRA's Customer Service Department receives your affidavit, the violation invoice will be closed and our records will be amended.

What if I don’t have a qualifying veteran’s license plate?

Vehicles which are not eligible are required to pay the applicable toll.

Per Texas Transportation Code § 372.053, eligibility is limited to vehicles which are:

1. registered with the State of Texas and
2. displaying the qualifying specialty license plate for any of the following:

  • Disabled Veterans
  • Purple Heart recipients
  • Medal of Honor recipients
  • Legion of Valor recipients

Vehicles which are not eligible are required to pay the applicable toll.

Note: To see examples of qualifying Texas license plates, please visit www.txdmv.gov and select “Specialty License Plates.”

What if I have temporary license plates or I change license plates?

For motorists with temporary license plates, it is advised that you pay cash at all toll plazas until your permanent license plates are issued.  However, temporary plates ("TEMP") are allowed up to 30 days on any given vehicle, after which time the tag will become "suspended" until permanent plates are identified on the account.

Just as your license plate is unique to your vehicle, your EZ TAG is unique to a specific license plate.  As per your EZ Agreement, if you change vehicles and/or license plates you must update your account information online or call Customer Service at 281-875-3279 (M-F 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), or visit any EZ TAG Store with the new license plate/vehicle information. Keeping your data current will ensure your TAG continues to read properly and violations will not occur if your new (unregistered) vehicle or license plate is used on the toll road system.

What if I’m a veteran with multiple cars – are all of my cars eligible? What about my spouse’s car?

Per Texas Transportation Code § 372.053, eligibility is limited to vehicles which are:

1. registered with the State of Texas and
2. displaying the qualifying specialty license plate for any of the following:

  • Disabled Veterans
  • Purple Heart recipients
  • Medal of Honor recipients
  • Legion of Valor recipients
Vehicles which are not eligible are required to pay the applicable toll.

Note: To see examples of qualifying Texas license plates, please visit www.txdmv.gov and select “Specialty License Plates.”

What is a Toll Violation Invoice?

A Toll Violation Invoice is an invoice sent to the registered owner or renter (not necessarily the driver) of a vehicle that traveled through a tolling location and did not pay the proper toll at the time of the transaction(s).  A Toll Violation Invoice reflects the date, time, and location of each toll violation event included in the invoice, as well as the past-due toll amount and any additional fees owed.

Failure to pay a toll is against the law.  Failure to resolve violations may result in fines, referral to a collection agency, withdrawal of your eligibility to renew your vehicle registration, and other legal measures as defined by Texas law.

To pay your Toll Violation Invoice, or to pay an outstanding toll which has not been invoiced, see How do I pay for a toll violation?

What vehicles require license plate TAGs instead of regular TAGs?

Usually vehicles that feature a solar coated windshield will need to display the EZ TAG on the license plate.

Vehicles known to require license plate mounted tags instead of regular sticker (or windshield) EZ TAGs are:

Audi A6 (2005-2006)

Chevrolet Lumina APV (1991-1996)

Chevrolet Venture (2005-2005)

Oldsmobile Silhouette (2002-2004)

Pontiac Montana (2002-2005)

Pontiac Transport (1995-1996)

The following vehicles have a limited amount of space for a windshield mounted EZ TAG and might require a license plate mounted tag:

BMW M5 Series (2005-2006)

Buick Rendezvous (2002-2006)

Chevrolet Venture (1997-2001

Mercedes Benz CL Class (2001-2006)

Mercedes Benz S Class (2000-2006)

Oldsmobile Silhouette (1997-2001)

Pontiac Aztec (2001-2005)

Pontiac Montana (1999-2001)

Pontiac Transport (1997-1998)

Volvo S80 (1999-2005)

(*Note: This list may not be inclusive of all vehicles that can not use a sticker tag. If you feel that your windshield mounted EZ TAG is not working properly, please contact EZ TAG Customer Service at (281) 875-EASY (3279) to speak with a representative about your specific tag needs.)

Where is EZ TAG accepted as a payment option?

EZ TAG works on most Texas toll roads with electronic tolling lanes!

Note: In order for your EZ TAG to be accepted as a payment option, your EZ TAG Account must be in good standing. When you're planning to use a toll road, parking garage or other facility, we encourage you to check with the entity to confirm they will accept EZ TAG. Acceptance of EZ TAG as a form of payment outside of Harris and Fort Bend County toll roads is not guaranteed. EZ TAG is not accepted as a payment option at airport locations.

Whom should I contact for more information about the HCTRA Veteran Discount Tolling Program?

Please call (281) 875-3279, send us an e-mail, or visit one of our convenient store locations.

Why can't the new EZ TAGs be removed from my windshield?

Sticker-type EZ TAGs generally become inactive once removed from the windshield and attempting to transfer these TAGs is likely to render them inoperable and place you at a high risk for receiving toll violations.

Why do you need my vehicle license plate number?

In the unlikely event that your EZ TAG transponder is not read properly, we can use your license plate number listed on your account to identify your vehicle to be sure the correct toll amount is applied to your EZ TAG Account.

Without correct license plate information it is impossible to identify you as an EZ TAG Account holder and you could be charged with toll violation events (refer to your EZ Agreement).

REMINDER:  If you should purchase or sell your vehicle, it is important to update your account information as soon as possible.  Vehicle information may be updated online or by contacting Customer Service by email, telephone at 281-875-3279 (M-F 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), or by visiting an EZ TAG Store.

Why must the EZ TAG be mounted on my windshield?

To ensure a valid transaction and avoid toll violation fines.

The EZ TAG must be properly mounted per the instructions provided in your EZ TAG Kit to ensure a valid transaction (typical mounting is inside the front windshield, four inches below the top of the windshield and two inches to the right of your rear-view mirror). EZ TAG operates on a radio frequency and improper mounting may interfere with your EZ TAG functionality and could result in toll violation events.

Holding the tag with your hand or leaving it on the dashboard will also prevent the EZ TAG from reading accurately and may result in incomplete toll road entry/exit data, which may cause inaccurate account information or possible toll violation events.

NOTE:  Certain vehicles with a high metallic content in their windshields and/or motorcycles may require a specialized EZ TAG.  If you believe your vehicle may require a specialized EZ TAG, please email or call Customer Service at 281-875-3279 (M-F 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m and Saturday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), or visit an EZ TAG Store.

Will I need more than one EZ TAG?

If you drive more than one vehicle on the toll road, you will need an EZ TAG for each vehicle.

Will the new EZ TAG work with my OnStar system or satellite radio?

Based on testing and review, yes your TAG should work in tandem with both the OnStar system and satellite radio programs such as XM and Sirius.

The EZ TAG operates on a completely different bandwidth, which should not cause radio interference. Also, the EZ TAG does not act as a transmitter and only modulates in the presence of a reader.
