Toll Road Information – Lane Types
The Harris County Toll Road Authority system consists of approximately 126 miles of roadway in the Houston / Harris County area.
The Westpark Tollway, Katy Managed Lanes, Tomball Tollway, and the Northeast section of the Sam Houston Tollway are all-electronic tolling facilities. All-electronic tolling means there are no toll booths, and no cash payment is accepted. An EZ TAG or other interoperable Texas toll payment tag is required. Toll payment is due at the time of the transaction. Pay-by-mail is not an option available on toll roads operated by Harris County.
* Permit loads are not allowed on any toll road operated by Harris County.
EZ TAG ONLY lanes
Our dedicated EZ TAG ONLY lanes are for motorists enrolled in the EZ TAG program, who have properly mounted EZ TAGS in their registered vehicles. Non-stop passage is allowed through these lanes, as tolls are automatically (electronically) deducted from prepaid accounts. These lanes can accommodate all vehicle classifications, from motorcycles to 18-wheelers.
While all lanes accepting EZ TAGs are interoperable, some are designated with the TxTag logo.
EXACT CHANGE lanes
Motorists who wish to pay their toll using coins only are directed to the automatic (unattended) lanes marked with green canopy signs that read EXACT CHANGE / CARS ONLY NO TRAILERS. Patrons using the Exact Change lanes must come to a complete stop, pay the toll and wait for the gate arm to raise before proceeding through the lane.
EXACT CHANGE with EZ TAG
Some EXACT CHANGE lanes can also process EZ TAG transactions where the smaller EZ TAG signs are displayed. Motorists are advised that the Exact Change lanes are 8' to 10' wide and are for two-axle (passenger car) transactions only. Trucks, cars pulling trailers, buses, oversized sports utility vehicles, etc. are not allowed in these lanes and are directed to the collector-attended lanes marked with blue signs.
PLEASE NOTE that the gate arm is programmed to completely cycle between transactions and must come down behind the vehicle ahead of you before your transaction can be properly recorded. Failure to come to a complete stop and allowing the gate to complete its cycle before proceeding through could result in the gate arm coming down on to your vehicle. EZ TAG patrons must come to a complete stop in these lanes to allow time for the gate to complete its cycle.
FULL SERVICE and CHANGE MADE lanes
Our Collector-Attended lanes are designated on the canopy with blue signs that read FULL SERVICE/RECEIPTS and CHANGE MADE. Collector-Attended lanes, which are wider (10' to 12') than the automatic lanes, can process multi-axle vehicle and passenger car transactions. These lanes do not accept EZ TAGs for payment (see below).
FULL SERVICE with EZ TAG lanes
Some FULL SERVICE / RECEIPTS lanes can also process EZ TAG transactions if the smaller EZ TAG signs are posted below the blue sign verbiage.
Tolled entrance and exit ramps have the same signs as the mainline plazas to designate automatic, attended and EZ TAG lanes. While some ramps may have designated EZ TAG ONLY lanes, motorists are advised that all ramp lanes require a complete stop to ensure accurate readings and a safe merge with the flow of traffic exiting or entering the system.
